Stablecoins Now Settle $12 Trillion a Year
# Stablecoins now settle $12 trillion a year and three banks just got in

$12 trillion annualized, and for the first time most of it isn't exchange settlement.
It's companies paying each other.
## The bank announcements
Three large institutions, three pilots, all aimed at institutional clients. Corporate treasury, cross-border payments, merchant settlement. Deposits issued against bank liabilities, redeemable at par.
The par part is the entire pitch. A direct bank claim is a different product than a crypto-native stablecoin. Every corporate treasurer I've seen discussing this refuses a wrapper around a wrapper.
Actual stated demand so far isn't about yield or about crypto exposure. It's about working capital. Clearing a cross-border payment in seconds instead of T+2 has a value you can put in a spreadsheet. It also skips the requirement for the treasury team to accept price volatility.
That's a much easier sell than "here's a new asset class."
## B2B is the fastest-growing line
Payment and remittance both growing faster than exchange settlement, which has historically been the largest category and is now the slowest grower.
I'd argue this is the healthiest possible mix. Exchange volume is a function of people gambling; it goes to zero fast when it needs to. Payment volume is a function of businesses transacting, which is slower, duller, and doesn't leave.
> **Editor here:** I deliberately don't quote a live price, spread or fee in this piece — those move hourly and any number I printed would be wrong by morning. For the current figure and the actual fee you'll pay, [check it live here](https://faucet.sbs/p/crypto).
## Regulation is landing in pieces
Federal payment stablecoin bill cleared committee. Several states have published guidance. The frameworks don't match each other, particularly on foreign-issued tokens.
The open question everyone keeps circling: can you pay interest to a token holder directly? Several issuers have built products that sit exactly on the current line. Either clever compliance or an invitation to regulate. I genuinely don't know which yet.

## What would actually move the number
Interop. Bank tokens working inside apps that only accept crypto-native stablecoins today. That gap is the single biggest reason institutional settlement stops at $12 trillion instead of going somewhere larger.
Second: a cross-border framework that takes correspondent banking out of the path entirely. Harder, and nobody's close.
Meanwhile retail still mostly doesn't touch any of this. Institutions got the plumbing. Consumers didn't, and consumers are the bigger market by count if not by volume. That gap is the opportunity, and it's wide open right now.
