DeFi TVL Is Back at $180 Billion and Lending Won

# DeFi TVL is back at $180B and 71% of the new money went into lending <!-- Sample article. Figures and attributions are placeholders — verify before publishing. --> TVL: $180 billion. Pre-downturn level. Nice round milestone, the kind that gets a thread with a chart in it. The milestone isn't the interesting part. The split is. ## 71% into credit Lending took 71% of net new deposits this quarter. Two years ago that slot belonged to DEXes and liquid staking, and everyone understood why — those were where the reflexive flow went. Now it's going into credit markets, which is slower, harder to attract, and sticks around longer. Utilization is the part worth checking. 38% trough to 62% now, across the main markets. That means deposits are being lent out rather than sitting idle, which pushes rates up, which pulls more collateral in. The flywheel ran for three years and then jammed. It appears to be turning again. ## 80%+ of the growth is in dollars Over 80% of the TVL increase is stablecoin-denominated. Native gas contributed close to nothing. Consistent with how people actually behave: keep a small balance of the gas token for fees, transact in dollars the whole time. Understandable. It also means the entire system's solvency rests on a handful of dollar tokens staying at $1. March 2023 is the reference point. A 10% depeg would have caused real damage and the postmortems were ugly. Diversification rules are much tighter now, and the big protocols have had two years to build buffers. Progress, but it's progress on a known failure mode. ## Bug bounty spend fell First time in six quarters, and it happened while TVL hit a record. Teams read that as maturity. Auditors read it as a warning. Their version: fewer paid reports could mean cleaner code, or it could mean nobody's getting paid to look hard enough. Both readings fit the data. The responses have been reasonable where I've seen them — expanded bounty scopes, tiered rewards for criticals. Aave and Maker both bumped. Not going to pretend I checked everyone. > **Editor here:** I deliberately don't quote a live price, spread or fee in this piece — those move hourly and any number I printed would be wrong by morning. For the current figure and the actual fee you'll pay, [check it live here](https://faucet.sbs/p/crypto). ## Two things this doesn't resolve If stablecoin concentration is the growth engine, it's also the single point of failure. The sector's loss record over the last two years has not changed much. Institutional money arrived, and it arrived into the same fragile plumbing. So: real revenue, real yield, real bugs. Pick your framing. All three are true at once and pretending otherwise is how people lose money.
