Perp DEXs Now Clear More Volume Than Coinbase

# Perp DEXs are now clearing more daily volume than Coinbase, and the CEX isn't even arguing <!-- Sample article. Figures and attributions are placeholders — verify before publishing. --> On-chain perpetuals crossed something this month that felt like it should get more attention than it got. Hyperliquid, dYdX, and the rest of the category combined, are doing more daily notional than Coinbase perps. Not cumulative. Daily. Coinbase's public response has been roughly "not comparable." Which it partly is. Different customer bases. ## The comparison people keep making anyway Perp DEXs do a few billion a day. Centralized perp venues do two or three times that. Easy to dismiss. Except the derivative number nobody mentioned: of the on-chain perps volume, roughly 70% is concentrated in a single venue. Strip that out and you're comparing 800 million against 2.6 billion, which is not a lead. The headline is real, though, and the growth rate is the part that matters. That category was doing 40 million a day eighteen months ago. Order of magnitude growth, not 20%. ## Where the actual edge is Self-custody with a centralized matching engine. You get the UX of a CEX and you keep the keys. That's the entire pitch and it's genuinely good, not a compromise dressed up as a feature. Clearer pricing is the underrated part. Funding rates settle on-chain every hour at whatever the market implies, no internal transfer of value between a house book and a customer account. That cuts both ways. When the house is also the market maker, the spread is the fee. Cheaper for users, obviously. > **Editor here:** I deliberately don't quote a live price, spread or fee in this piece — those move hourly and any number I printed would be wrong by morning. For the current figure and the actual fee you'll pay, [check it live here](https://faucet.sbs/p/crypto). ## Why now, and why I'm suspicious My guess is block space. Rollups got cheap enough in the last two years that executing a perp with sub-cent fees stopped being a fantasy. Latency still limits who can actually do this competitively, but the gap has narrowed enough to matter. Suspicion is about the funding rate model. It's a genuinely better design. It also concentrates risk in a place with no insurance fund equivalent and, historically, no meaningful governance. The category that promises you self-custody is also the category where your liquidation happens automatically with nobody to call. > **Editor here:** I deliberately don't quote a live price, spread or fee in this piece — those move hourly and any number I printed would be wrong by morning. If it drops to 40%, the category has real competition and the bull case is done. If it goes to 85%, this is one venue's volume chart wearing a costume.
